Extra Reading Diary: Nigerian Folk Stories

Nigerian Folk Stories

Of the Pretty Stranger who Killed the King:

  • The whole town wanted to kill him, and he didn't know about the witch
  • Sounds like the king is a creeper
  • She cut his head off and took it with her, how morbid
  • Guess they caught them by surprise
Why the Bat Flies by Night:
  • Weird names
  • Boil your self in the water your food goes in...weird
  • The rat didn't tell her how the soup would be so good so how did she know to blame the bat
  • I like when stories give reason to why things are how they are
The Disobedient Daughter Who Married a Skull:
  • I like that the girl didn't marry just any old person her parents wanted her to
  • How can people lend body parts
  • Some of these stories are too irrational
  • What a coincidence that she fell in love with him
  • Lots of lessons on not marrying strangers
The King who Married the Cock's Daughter:
  • The king had wives, so more than one
  • Of course the other wives were jealous
  • The king is dumb for making her leave for doing what she was supposed to do
  • What horrible parents
The Woman, the Ape, and the Child:
  • Weird they have to pay for their wives
  • At least the truth came out in the end
  • Jealously always gets the best of people
The Fish and the Leopards Wife:
  • No way fish ever lived on land
  • How would a leopard live in a bush
  • Glad someone told on the fish
Why the Worms Live Underneath the Ground:
  • All these stories people are having feast, I love me a good feast
  • Poor worms no one likes them
  •  I would hide too
The Elephant and the Tortoise:
  • I picture an elephant with really big eyes
  • I feel like men and animals are still friends
  • I laughed at the picture in my head of the elephant with little eyeballs
  • I never really thought of how small elephants eyes were
Why a Hawk Kills Chickens:
  • You would think the hawk would just eat the hen without marrying it
  • And the parents shouldn't have to pay a dowry
Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky:
  • Thats a nice friend to build a new house just for them to come over
  • Don't really like the reason the sun and the moon are in the sky in this story
Why the Cat Kills Rats:
  • The king had a store?
  • What can angry cat, could have just punished the rat
  • It was all for love
